The Sound of Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is one of those cities that you can’t help but fall in love with. It has mountains, gardens, charm, history and even a beautiful castle. I spent 3 nights in Austria’s fourth largest city and also took advantage of Salzburg’s location by taking a couple of day trips to Hallstatt and Lake Konigssee in Berchtesgaden National Park (I highly recommend each one of those places if you are staying in or around Salzburg).
For a relatively small city, Salzburg has a pretty famous past. It was the setting for the musical and film “The Sound of Music” and also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  While walking around the city and especially Old Town, you can definitely see the city’s love for each of those with Sound of Music Tours and Mozart rubber duckies to name a few.

One of the most beautiful parts of the city is Old Town. Old Town is one of the best preserved city centers in Europe and in 1997, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shortly after arriving in Salzburg, I spent the afternoon exploring my surroundings. I grabbed a quick bite to eat at a nearby farmers market and then made my way to Getreidegasse, one of Salzburg’s most busy (and prettiest) streets. It is line with restaurants, shops and the house at Getreidegasse 9 is the place where Mozart was born and lived until the age of 17.

After my time in Old Town, I headed towards the Salzach River. Since the weather was beyond perfect that day, there were people laying out by the river soaking up the warm sun and I totally wanted to join them. After crossing the bridge, I headed over to Mirabell Palace and Gardens. You might recognize the palace and gardens as the setting for Do-Re-Mi in “The Sound of Music” and for other scenes in the film as well.
From the gardens, you have a pretty amazing view of the fortress in the background. It really is like stepping back in time.  No Starbucks or McDonald’s in sight (even though they are both nearby). Can you imagine having a wedding there or attending one? Magical.
Since I was staying in Old Town during my stay, I eventually had to make my way back but I made a pitstop at the Residenzplatz and Salzburg Cathedral first. The Residenzplatz is a large square built in 1587 located in the heart of Salzburg, it is also walking distance from our hotel. Every morning, it was so nice to walk out from the hotel and see a beautiful fountain, horse carriages and people just enjoying themselves. You can also spot students riding their bikes to class as you walk around since there is a university nearby. Talk about an amazing campus!
Salzburg is such a gorgeous city and definitely left its mark on my heart. Even though I was only there for three days, I easily could have spent another three days exploring the city and venture out around the Alps. Salzburg, I will be back.

  1. Beautiful photos of Salzburg! I went once maybe 8 years ago on a trip with my dad. We were only there on a day trip and I can see why you enjoyed spending a few days there! Especially with that gorgeous view from your hotel 🙂

  2. You got exceptionally good weather for March! Salzburg is a very picturesque city! I do remember Mozart's house from when I visited years and years ago!!

  3. Salzburg looks beautiful. You're really making me want to visit! Did you join any music tours? I bet the Sound of Music tour is fun.

  4. Thanks Sara! It was great… I think it also helped that we broke up each day with a day trip. It was a great "home base" to come back to and walk around and have dinner. Our hotel was awesome too… didn't hurt that they upgraded us 😉 lol

  5. We unfortunately didn't do any tours but we saw a bunch of Sound of Music tour buses going around. I think it would be fun, but I would have to convince my husband of that lol. If anything, it would be a great way to see the city!

  6. Thanks Annie! I'm going to peruse through your archive now to see your pics 🙂 I love Europe in the winter. I would love to go back to Salzburg in December and walk around the city… plus Christmas markets!

  7. Yes, you'll have to go back 🙂 We got so lucky with the weather… it was perfect, it was like walking around California lol I would love to have some of that "bright and cheery" right now in Houston, we have been getting so much rain!

  8. Oh wow, what a cute Old Town. I've never been to Salzburg (or Austria even) but it looks absolutely picturesque. Thanks for sharing your impressions!
