Last week, I posted about things to do while in Hallstatt (here and here) but today I want to show you around the town itself. Hallstatt is a super charming town located about 1.5 hours from Salzburg. It has a population of under 1,000 and sits on the southern shore of Hallstatter See. It is known for its picturesque settings (a photographer’s dream) and salt mines.
Since I went in mid-April and also mid-week, I could walk around the town at my leisure and not be surrounded by other tourists. I’m sure by the summertime, it can get pretty crowded pretty quick so if you are wanting to stay overnight in town, I would book early! Another option is to stay in Obertraun across the lake. I just drove in from Salzburg for the day and it was the perfect day trip.
After a morning of boating, I grabbed lunch at a cute restaurant and sat right on the water. The food was good, not great, but it was mostly about just sitting by the lake and enjoying my amazing view. I spent the rest of the afternoon walking around town, eating gelato and thinking to myself, I can’t believe towns like this still exist in the world.
Once you get away from the shoreline, the town is like a mini-maze with stairs and walkways that lead you to different parts of the mountainside. If you get a chance, make your way towards the top to get a rooftop view of the town. There is also a cemetery and church up there as well.
What is your favorite thing about Hallstatt, Austria?
Don’t forget to follow along on social media!
That scenery!! The mountains, the lake, the blue skies, the cute houses – it's like a postcard or something.
Ah Hallstatt looks so quaint and perfect. I love the fact that you can take the walkways and staircases up the mountainside. I can imagine it does get pretty crazy in the summer — you guys chose a great time for a visit! Super pretty photos!
Omg, what is not to love actually!! Love the pictures, they are amazing!!
We went to Halstatt last spring and loved it. Your pictures are great!

Look at that weather! You seriously did go at such a perfect time…not too touristy but still really nice weather 🙂
It was perfect! Gotta love Europe in the springtime! 🙂
I still can't get over this place, I've loved reading about it from your posts. And that's great that you got to avoid the crowds as I can imagine how crazy busy it must get! Being by that lake must have felt so serene 🙂
Cutest town ever. I love those swan paddle boats!
Ahh it's such a cute little place! I've been really enjoying all your posts on Hallstratt. I imagine the views just get better and better as you make your way to the top!
I think the spring time is the perfect time to go… it was nice not having to fight a crowd! I wish my desk was overlooking that lake! Boo to reality lol
I asked my husband if he wanted to ride one of those swans with me, he was like "Negative" lol
The views definitely did! Even though, there's no "bad view" in Hallstatt! Wish we had cute towns like this in the States!
How beautiful – my whole family have been but me because I couldn't get out of work the weekend I was meant to go 🙁 it looks so gorgeous. My family have said it is the best place they have ever been to and my brother is going again this summer!
Awe boo! Hopefully you will get your chance to visit Hallstatt soon! It's a great little town, so much charm! Jealous that you're brother is going back there!
It's charming! Sometimes seeing places off season is so much better than being there when everybody else is also there!!
Isn't Hallstatt just the best? It was cold when we went in October but still gorgeous. My parents want to go when they visit so hopefully it will be warm then, haha! Also awesome waterfall find!!
How super lovely! I'll have to add this to my ever growing "want to visit" list! x
I totally agree! I HATE crowds lol… and going to Disney this summer is not going to help lol
I couldn't believe the weather we had while in Hallstatt… sunny and warm! I didn't pack anything for warm weather so I had to stop at HM in Salzburg to pick up some shorts lol I would love to see Hallstatt in the winter with snow everywhere. I'm jealous you get to go back there! 🙂
It's such a charming town! Definitely bucket list worthy 🙂
Omg how beautiful! The lake view with the mountains in the background is really breathtaking.
Every picture is like a postcard, definitely bucket list material!
Such a cool day trip! I can't wait until we visit Austria, Vienna is a t the top of our list!
It definitely is! It was on my bucket list the second I saw a picture of it on a website! Every where you looked, it was picture worthy!
We wanted to visit Vienna too but didn't have time 🙁 I didn't want to squeeze it in and not get the full experience. I hear it's such a beautiful city!
Ahh, we were in Vienna over Christmas but missed Hallstatt. I wish we had found time to visit. Your pictures are lovely!
