The Charming Town of Hallstatt, Austria

Last week, I posted about things to do while in Hallstatt (here and here) but today I want to show you around the town itself. Hallstatt is a super charming town located about 1.5 hours from Salzburg. It has a population of under 1,000 and sits on the southern shore of Hallstatter See. It is known for its picturesque settings (a photographer’s dream) and salt mines.
Since I went in mid-April and also mid-week, I could walk around the town at my leisure and not be surrounded by other tourists. I’m sure by the summertime, it can get pretty crowded pretty quick so if you are wanting to stay overnight in town, I would book early! Another option is to stay in Obertraun across the lake. I just drove in from Salzburg for the day and it was the perfect day trip.
After a morning of boating, I grabbed lunch at a cute restaurant and sat right on the water. The food was good, not great, but it was mostly about just sitting by the lake and enjoying my amazing view. I spent the rest of the afternoon walking around town, eating gelato and thinking to myself, I can’t believe towns like this still exist in the world.
Once you get away from the shoreline, the town is like a mini-maze with stairs and walkways that lead you to different parts of the mountainside. If you get a chance, make your way towards the top to get a rooftop view of the town. There is also a cemetery and church up there as well.
